Very good post - not only because I enjoyed it but also because it gave me food for thought. Your post just sparked an idea for a woodworking project I've been contemplating. Thank you so much.

Stumbled it!

@Kishau, Shane, eBerlin - Thanks for sharing; It's funny that all of your brought up productivity as the central benefit of ditching the commute; I personally get a ton more done in my "stolen time" that I'd otherwise spend commuting.

Another huge aspect is the mental fatigue that driving tends to induce (at least in traffic). Yes, driving can be completely invigorating if you've got some good tunes or an audio book, but the "need" to commute everyday can really wear a guy/gal down. Sometimes I would leave work excited to get back to working on a freelance project at home and be completely drained by time I walked in the door. It's intimidating to think of how many hours of productivity are lost because of the sheer number of people going through the same routine. Granted, it's a requirement for most jobs, but regardless, between the carbon output and lost productivity it seems like something's gonna have to break sooner or later and more of these remote-jobs will open up.

Excellent Article! I've worked from home for 10 years (off and on, for myself and others). IMO, it's a productive lifestyle, particularly for those that live or work in major metropolitan areas with "traffic issues"(such as the District of Columbia). There are a few disadvantages to having a home office such as the inability to disconnect or not designating a "home office". There are also workable solutions to these issues. The pros outweigh the cons in my opinion.

I do (kinda) miss a periodic commute. I do my best "thinking" while driving, but I can certainly drive to Starbucks if I need to "think." :)

Excellent article.

I have worked from home for some years both with my previous employer and now as a freelancer.

In addition to the time & carbon footprint arguments, I believe the biggest benefit is increased productivity. When I used to go into the office it was to predominantly chat & gossip. I did much less work.

At home, I can perhaps get twice as much done because there are fewer interruptions, fewer phonecalls and I am relaxed in my own environment.

I was lucky, my employers (Kodak) had a very mature approach to home working and there were very few snide comments about watching daytime tv and working in my pyjamas. If only more employers took the same view.

I have to admit in a tiiiiny sick and deluded way I miss my commute. That said, the minute I get back in a car to drive to a clients office, I feel nauseous so this is just silly nostalgia. My commute was an hour each way, (50 some odd miles). I listened to books and motivational talks on tape.

Today though, I spend that commute time taking a swim my wife or writing. I have to say, even if it doesn't save the world, it can save the marriage.

Thanks for the feedback Peter! I debated over also including a paragraph over carpooling, but decided to leave it out in the interest of keeping focused on the topic of getting rid of the commute altogether. The real issue here is freedom - we become independent contractors to increase the amount of freedom in our lives; that fact that we don't have to commute is one of the ways that we can exercise that freedom for a good cause. With traffic becoming nigh unbearable here in LA and technology expanding to allow more people to work from home, it'll be interesting to see over the next 5-10 years how this trend of remote contracting grows.
